Centrepoint Shopping Centre, Bunbury ($16m)

Civil and structural engineering services were provided for major renovations and extensions to this existing retail centre.  Additions included a discount department store, specialty shops and two major elevated car decks.

The complicated and variable ground conditions required a thorough but economical geotechnical investigation. Careful analysis of the geotechnical report resulted in three distinct solutions being utilised on the site.  Grouted piles, vibro-flotation and traditional high level foundations were designed for the differing conditions experienced.  This rational approach resulted in major cost savings in the order of $100,000 compared to the conservative approach taken by others on the original development.

Major civil works included the diversion and modification of arterial roads surrounding the centre including roundabouts and traffic signals. Resolving overland stormwater flows for the 1 in 100 year flood condition provided a unique challenge and required investigating a number of alternative solutions. Incorporating a "relief " tunnel under the new retail floor space proved the optimum solution.
