Perth Zoo Wetlands Enclosure
Civil & Public Infrastructure
- Alternative design solutions explored for client consideration.
- Tensioned cable structure to support netting enclosure.
The Wetlands Enclosure adds to the portfolio of projects to be designed and engineered by Pritchard Francis at Perth Zoo. The structure is a combination of new vermin proof concrete and limestone perimeter walls and stainless steel single knit woven stainless steel bird mesh netting enclosing the water bird and penguin exhibits.
The netting was suspended on a grid of tensioned stainless steel cables attached to the new purpose build steel poles. Poles were stabilised by use of tensioned backstays attached to steel screw piles.
Internal to the enclosure, existing bitumen pathways and public viewing decks were replaced with new walkways and decks fabricated from recycled Jarrah timber.
Pritchard Francis provided the design and documentation services for the project, with specific attention required to details to ensure the enclosure achieved the necessary vermin proof needs.
