Chevron Australia’s Gorgon Gas Project is the largest single resource project in Australia’s History. This Natural Gas Project is located off the Northwest coast of Western Australia, with the LNG plant positioned on Barrow Island.
Pritchard Francis was commissioned by John Holland to execute the permanent administration buildings under a design and construction arrangement as part of the Kellogg Joint Venture contract. Pritchard Francis provided lead, civil and structural consultant roles for the development and was also responsible for sourcing the preferred consultancy team. Innovative engineering, advanced modeling and blast design strengthened John Holland’s position when bidding for the work.
The permanent administration buildings consisted of a warehouse, workshop and fire station as well as additional supporting structures around the site. These buildings complement the existing operations and laboratory buildings, providing operational control and support for the Gorgon Gas Facility at Barrow Island.
Barrow Island is an ‘A’ Class Reserve, this generated special requirements for the construction of the buildings onsite. All materials and machinery were fumigated and quarantine controlled, it was imperative that trades, site welding and insitu placement of materials were minimised.
The site posed unique challenges for our design team due to the flat nature of the site, cyclonic conditions (wind and impact loadings), overland flooding, heavy vehicles loads and blast loading requirements. Pritchard Francis’ ability to provide lead consulting, civil and structural personnel allowed for Revit and AutoCAD® Civil 3D to be utilised across the disciplines during design and construction. This allowed all elements down to 50mm penetrations to be documented in the BIM model. The client requires full LOD 500 models are to allow for full facility maintenance of the project. This level of BIM technology is market leading and has set the scene for future developments moving forward.
The Gorgon Project was a landmark initiative within the office and paved the way forward for NPI (Non-process infrastructure) capabilities within the Firm. Our team was pleased to be part of this important development in Western Australia.
