The East Kimberley Development Package [EKDP] is a joint venture between Federal and State agencies to improve and develop the infrastructure in the East Kimberley to suit future population expansion of the region.

As part of the EKDP of works, Pritchard Francis was commissioned to undertake civil and structural engineering services for a number of projects throughout the East Kimberley. This includes the:

  • District High School
  • Canteen
  • Primary School
  • Community Library
  • TAFE
  • Hospital expansion
  • Short stay patient accommodation

The project was procured by the state government as a ‘Guaranteed Maximum Price’ procurement model with John Holland. The team was novated to John Holland to complete the project.

The Project was completed on time and on budget. Even with the novated Design and Construct relationship, the Contractor didn’t revise a single structural detail for the project demonstrating the cost effectiveness and buildablity of the structural design.

Due to the regional location, light gauge stud walls within a structural frame were used for most structures with rafters and purlins for framing. The buildings were designed as sealed with particular emphasis on detailing to ensure the vapor seal could be installed continuously.

Overland flooding can be an ongoing issue for these large flat sites. Swales were used to resolve these issues with minor stone pitching to resolve scouring issues.
